A simple local, originally opened in 1895 and revitalised by a refurbishment which saw the introduction of Real Ales. The original landlord, William Paterson, was a member of the local militia or volunteers, hence the name. The Beer, in this free house, is selected from Stewart and Cairngorm Breweries. There is a very comfortable lounge area near to the bar which is good for conversation; a darts and pool area is away from the bar. At times pub activities come to the fore with poker and quiz nights and the occasional live music.
